Aren't the data transfer speeds of a USB 2 drive and a firewire drive
pretty close now?
I'm confused as I thought that Firewire 400 was rated at 400 megabits per
second while USB 2 was 480 megabits per second. But when I look at a few
articles online it sounds like those rates are misleading.

I have never had any problems with external drives other then their general quality. Western Digital rivals C-Gate. As Gord said, the best is to go with fire wire. The only reason I recommend using the combo USB/Firewire drive, is so that you don't run into any situations where you can't access your file if there is no firewire facilities.
