MessageCaglar, JS is right about the display settings for CT and Sib Speaking. SS needs 16 bit colour and CT 32. This is only a problem if your planning to run them both at the same time, which is difficult as it is, because Sibelius gets very stroppy about MIDI settings. If you only use one followed by the other then you just have to reconfigure the display modes. There are two ways to work around this. The first is to get JSonar, which can work on 16 or 32 bit colour, and use that whenever you need to run Sibelius and Sonar with out rebooting. The big difference between JSonar and CT is that JSonar gives you Sonar as it comes out of the box, whilst CT adds a lot of extra functions which can make things easier (although JSonar has a few options for scrubbing and moving the now time in small steps from the keyboard which CT would be well advised to implement). You could always install two versions of JAWS, one with CT and one with JSonar. The other is to use Sibelius without any scripts, which is not as difficult as you might think. It doesn't give you the same feed back as SS and I'd only chance doing it this way on simple pieces, but if you just need to do basic stuff like note entry and putting dynamics and lyrics in then you don't need any scripts. Obviously, if you needed to do serious work on a score, you'd have to use the scripts with 3 but this does give you a way of working around the display modes. I know this sounds like a bit of a fiddle but its better than buying a second laptop, and certainly cheaper. Regarding the laptop - you don't need to worry about Sibelius, that'll run on almost anything. The problem is Sonar. It really depends on what kind of work you'll be doing. If your likely to be pushing the machine hard then you'll have to spend a lot on a good one. You should try to get one with two hard drives and as much RAM and processor power as possible. You should also consider getting one with a full sized keyboard. There a little bigger and heavier but you might find that preferable to carrying a PC keyboard around with you, since you'll need it to run Sib Speaking and Sonar. As for which type of processor you should go for - the juries still out on this one. From what I've been able to glean over the years, Athlons have a lot of number crunching potential which makes them good for batch processing. Pentiums, on the other hand, are good at streaming which makes them better for real time operations like recording and effect processing. I know that a lot of the big companies that sell specialised audio PCs use Pentiums over Athlons. Still, I'm sure that everyone else will have different views on this one. Hope this helps, Dan ----- Original Message ----- From: John Sanfilippo To: ddots-l@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Saturday, December 23, 2006 5:32 AM Subject: [ddots-l] Re: Lap top suggestion Well, as of right now and what I understand, screen access to Sonar requires one resolution setting, while screen access to Sibelius requires another screen resolution setting. So having both softwares on one machine and having to swithch between them is going to be, somewhat inconvenient. Someone chime in and correct me if I'm wrong here. One solution might be to get a fairly standard laptop for your Sibelius machine, and be very careful about getting another very suped up laptop with quality components for your Sonar machine. Just my thoughts. js -----Original Message----- From: ddots-l-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:ddots-l-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of A. What should I be careful with while choosing the new lap top to be able to use it properly with Jaws, Sonar and Sibelius? Thanks for any suggestions in advance.
