It's a rogue-like game, so actions only take place once you move. You have
to keep moving forward because the Darkness chases you and once it catches
up, you die. Every action you take causes the darkness to catch up, but
you can move forward at a much faster rate than it can catch up.

The (initial) goal is to beat the Demon Lord who shows up after 400km on
normal difficulty (easy mode, I guess). He's stupidly tough and the odds
of you beating him on your first run is basically zero. Here's the
interesting bit: After every run you gain Hero Points which you can use to
unlock perks and classes for your next run. You can also spend points on a
Vault which you can use to store items from previous runs, so if you find a
kick-ass sword you can save it there after you die and then it will be
available on the next run.

It's got a multiplayer mode but you don't really play with other people.
You can just see the statuses of other people playing on the same map, and
how far they've travelled. If someone gets killed by the Demon Lord,
there's a chance you might run into them in ghost form. They drop useful
items.

It takes a while to get into it but it's one of those "just one more try"
type of games.
