I too look at brand and I've had more failures with WD drives than any
other brand. I bought a 4GB WD which failed in what seems like days. The
replacement didn't last must longer. The local vender finally gave me a
Fujitsu which carried me out through the warranty period by constanly
chasing bad clusters.
In 1997 I was running the Beta of Win 98 and it became apparent the I
needed more storage. Dec 98 I bought a 60GB Maxter and ran it until Oct
2001 when it crashed, just a couple of months before the warranty
expired. Maxter gave me an RMA and before the old warranty was due to
expire I was running a new 80GB Maxter, since the 60GB drives were no
longer available. That 80GB drive is in a machine sitting here in front
of me and working fine.
Dec 98 to the present is pretty fair service, me thinks !
A WD drive has to be on a helluva good sale before I'd consider buying
one and then only if it has a three year warranty.
Trying to recover from a crashed drive is not one of my favorite
activites.
