If you want it in it's own window, use this:

<a href="http://doamin.subdomain.com/~myusername/images/large.jpg";
target="_new"><img
src="http://doamin.subdomain.com/~myusername/images/small.jpg";></a>

You need to specify a target if you want it in a new window.
