Not suggesting that you have critters, but I have seen things that would
make a normal person run in the other direction. I was once brought a
PC to repair that was setting on the person's kitchen counter. What I
found inside made me sick. I know that I would never eat any cookies
that she brought in to work again. It sounds like you have found your
problem. Here's hoping nothing else was damaged when the PSU went. Good
Luck.

Just got home with the new PSU. Took the cover off the old PSU and there
is yellow gunk between the two large caps. I'm going to assume that's
not good. The reason I still have questions is, I just did a quick google
(images), and the vast majority of the images shows bulging tops. the
two large ones don't have the bulging tops, but a tall one and a short
and fatter one does have the bulging tops. This might mean a number of
things. Like, if the smaller ones fail, will it cause the big one(s) to
fail as well? What is strangeer is, the fuse inside the PSU isn't blown.
Don't know what that might mean as well. :-O Well, gotta get back to
work!
Thanks! By the way, there's no little "critters" here Jack! <evil stare>

The only thing I know of in a computer system that would make a loud pop when it goes is a capacitor. The two largest caps in the box are in the PSU.
If it popped, it's ruptured !
By pulling the cover off the PSU you should be able to visually determine if a cap is blown. Caps usually quit because of age, rather than a short or something, and if you're handy with a pencil type soldering iron you could replace it with a similar item from Radio Shack or an online source.
That would save you the money to buy more storage. <g>
