I read some interesting articles on ownership of the Internet. There are governments that are petitioning the UN to take over ownership of the Internet and the EU is also interested in taking over. The response from the American Government is that ?America created the internet and does not want to give up ownership.? A UN World Summit on the Information Society will be held in November in Tunisia. There will be much discussion regarding who should serve as overseer of the internet. Some countries are worried that as they rely on the Internet more for governmental and other services and they want to be sure their plans won?t get derailed by some future change in policy. Companies, institutions, and individuals use the same sets of Internet standards and guidelines because doing so enables their data to go where they want it to go, and ensures that it will get there looking the same way it did when it left. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) manages the internet?s domain-name system of addresses, such as .com. This system is critical to the smooth operation of the network. The issue is who would have ultimate authority over the Internet's master directories, which tell Web browsers and e-mail programs how to direct traffic. One alternative would be to create a new naming system that could run alongside ICANN-sanctioned domains.
