Hi there: Wasn't there an email list for those who wanted to simply chat about those types of off-topic discussions? I know it's been brought to our attention a few times but I cannot remember it. Wasn't it like bookshare-chat or something like that? I'm writing because I see a situation developing and hope we can find a solution without involving the Bookshare staff. This is your list, and you can say what you like here. I'm mentioning this because I see it as a problem of logistics and would like to find an answer that works for most people. I don't think some of you are aware of this issue and its unintended consequences. Bookshare has asked us to use this list for wish list requests, so many of the Bookshare volunteers have subscribed to this list to serve the community. Many of us enjoy the discussion about books and like the community here. Yet in the past week, I have deleted 327 messages that had nothing to do with books, Bookshare, or reading at all. Several volunteers have left this list already for this reason, and that means that they won't see your wish list requests or respond to them. Cindy does forward many of the titles of the requests to the volunteers list, but the reason for wanting the books is often lost so that its immediacy is gone. You do have the right to say anything you like on this list. It's original purpose was to create a place where people could talk about books, reading, books they want to read, using reading devices, and such. The list is only loosely moderated to give everyone a voice. However, as the off-topic messages about things like singing synthesizers and blindisms increase, those who use this list to scan books for you will have to make a tough choice. They will choose between wading through hundreds of messages to find your book requests or just ignoring the list to get their work done. Some email programs can filter messages so that a person only gets messages from this list with the words wish list or request in them. That may be one solution for those that are skilled in creating email filters. Those that don't know how to use filters would need some tangible help getting them working. Do you see this as an issue worth resolving? Do you have other solutions to offer? Is there a way to compromise? What would you do if you were in my position? Thanks for any ideas you have to share. -- Monica Willyard Follow me on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/plumlipstick Visit my blog at http://www.scannersguild.com To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank Email to bookshare-discuss-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Put the word 'unsubscribe' by itself in the Subject line.
