Hi Missie,
A cell phone when turned on will send signals to and receive signals from 
the nearest cell, regardless of whether you are using it or not.  This is 
done to keep the system advised of the location of the cell phone if you 
receive a call.

These are two or three short burst of radio signal every five or ten 
minutes.
Yes, this could have caused the problem with your BookPort. When very close 
to another electronic device, the cell phone signal is strong enough to 
cause problems with nearby devices.
