I would like to apologize for what I consider to be an extremely rude message from Jude which he sent publicly to this group. The reason why I started this group was not only to have it be a support for people in or near the Philly area but I want it to be a safe place where people of all abilities and skill levels can ask questions and provide support to one another, regardless of their level of knowledge. All of us have areas of expertise in different subjects. All of us, myself most definitely included, have questions and get into situations where we need to ask for assistance in an environment in which we can all feel safe and not judged. I can well remember asking a lot of questions to a lot of very patient people back in the early 1990s when I was first learning my way around a computer. Even now in 2017 I still come up with situations where I need assistance and support from someone with more experience and I would never want to be referred to as a dumb blind person. I felt that Jude's comment, in spite of his level of knowledge, was unacceptable and I can't have that in this group. I have, therefore, taken the liberty of removing him. I'd like to encourage all of you to continue to ask questions, knowing that this is meant to be a safe place.

A more efficient way of doing an AND search on google is to enclose the search in quotes especially since google limits searches to 10 different search strings.
If you want to find sites with words near each other, you can use the NEAR operator. Operators get written in all upper case when text strings.

In order that the list membership should not be accused of being dumb blind people I leave you all with the following.
Google searching:
1) The OR operator mind the case gets you either of what's in the search string,
2) the AND operator gets you both of what's in the search string,
3) the (~) prefix on a string does soundex search on that string so if you're not certain of the spelling google will search for it under all soundex spellings,
4) the (-) operator excludes results you don't want in your search.

Jan,

To be honest, I didn't actually figure it out. I looked it up. <grin>

David, how on earth did you figure out that pressing the Sleep button
ten times would provide info re version and serial number?  Anyway,
thanks for the info.  Thanks, too, for the BARDtalk website.  That,
along with many other goodies, is now proudly displayed in my
"Goldfield" folder.

The BARDtalk Web site contains tons of information concerning the NLS
digital talking player, including a very detailed FAQ. It appears that
the FAQ may not have been updated since 2011 but I'm sure most of the
material contained in it is still current. It mentions that Bookshare
content cannot be played on the player; this is actually not true as you
can download Bookshare books as standard mp3 files. If you download the
books as mp3 audio the NLS player will be able to play them.

I also made an error during tonight's call regarding determining the
version of the player you have. With no cartridge in the player, press
the sleep button ten times to get this information. The version and
serial number will repeat until you press any other key to stop.
