Maria,

I'm afraid I will not be as helpful to you with this set of problems as I would like. First, I don't think you have cause to be overly concerned or frightened. In other words, I don't think you're dealing with a virus, spyware or some other malware which has somehow corrupted your system. Of course, I can't say that for certain but I doubt this is the case. Rather, you may be looking at some settings which need to be configured or just an odd set of glitches.

I have some of the issues you're describing with Thunderbird and my Outlook.com account. Ironically, with my computer Thunderbird and Gmail respond very quickly when I send messages, such as messages I send to this list. However, with my Outlook.com account I notice that there is a slightly longer than expected time from the time I choose to send a message until my focus returns to the inbox. Sometimes, I also get an error saying that there was a problem sending the message and, when I send it again, the second time goes through without errors. I think that, even when I get that error, the message is actually sent.

Normally, with your list of email accounts Thunderbird places them in the order in which they were configured. So, if you set up Gmail first, followed by SBC then Gmail would normally be at the top of the list and I don't know if there's a way to alter the order of the accounts. If the order of your accounts somehow got changed, I'm not sure what would have caused this. Again, I doubt you're dealing with a virus or some other type of malware but it wouldn't hurt to do a full scan of your system with the latest set of updates for your antimalware scanner, although I'll bet it will come up negative.

As to why you're seeing a Thunderbird and a Thunderbird New entry I am uncertain as to why this is occurring. I did a quick Google search about this and, so far, couldn't find references to such a problem. In order to really sleuth this one out, you may need to ask about this on a Thunderbird-specific list or online message board.

My dilemma is a bit complex and somewhat frightening to me. About a week ago I started having issues with sending emails via my Thunderbird and gmail account, which I still do. Sometimes they go slowly, but other times they don't go at all or I get a message that an error occurred with saving message to send mail.

. I kept on being asked to provide my credentials when trying to send an email. That part got fixed after paying $50 to a guy who told me it was just a matter of enabling cookies or something like that.

However, a very interesting thing has happened. When my son set me up with gmail my protocol was pop, but now it's imap. I'm not even sure if I'm explaining it well. The port used to be 995, but now it's 993. Two other interesting things, 1. gmail is now my top account, when before my sbc account was above the gmail account. The other thing is that in my default programs under control panel I have Thunderbird and Thunderbird new. I realize that Thunderbird upgraded recently, but it was longer than a week ago, when I started having these sending problems.

I should say that I'm not using gmail on the web.

Should I be concerned?
