David,

I had a WD MyBook that required me to switch it from Fat 32 to NTFS using the
windows tools when I switched a 1 TB external drive from XP to 7 and the drive
was having issues being recognized by Windows 7. After I allowed Windows 7 to
format the drive everything worked and in fact I am about to put the drive in
storage now as it is getting very old and still in use but beginning to show
signs of instability due to use and age.

That is all I can suggest.

Merv

Ok, as a technology trainer I often have to remind new or frustrated students
that there is no such thing as a stupid question and that there is no need for
them to be embarrassed. However, what I'm about to describe definitely falls
into the "what were you thinking" department and I admit to being a bit
embarrassed to ask this. However, my desire to fix the issue outweighs any
pride or embarrassment that I might have and so I'm going to post this in the
hopes that someone might have a solution. I've also posted this on the Toshiba
online forums.
I have an annoying issue that I hope somebody can assist me with. I have a
machine running Windows 10 Pro, 64-bit with a 1.5 TB Toshiba Canvio external
hard drive. Everything was working well, until I decided to tell Windows that I
wanted to use the drive as a recovery disk, not realizing what would happen.
What happened was that it did just that and made a recovery partition of around
32 GB and I could no longer access the other contents of the drive. An online
forum dealing with this situation advised to delete the partition using Windows
Disk Management tool and this should then give me access to the rest of the
drive. Unfortunately, deleting the partition did not do this. Now, Device
Manager sees the drive as a USB storage device but it does not show up in Disk
Management or in File Explorer. I’ve tried disconnecting and reconnecting the
drive and even removing it from Device Manager. It does come back but the drive
is still inaccessible. I would prefer, if possible, to try and solve this issue
using the built-in tools that come with Windows, rather than downloading any
third party software although I will do that if it’s the only way to get my
drive back. I have most of its contents backed up elsewhere and so my priority
is gaining full access to the drive rather than gaining access to the data that
I hope is still on it. I would be grateful for any help any of you could offer.
