You wouldn't have to put three asterisks. If you just want to make sure that blank lines are preserved, just one will do. Cuts down on the number of keystrokes by two-thirds; and it would be less repetitive and possibly annoying for audio users.

Hi Valerie,

If I were dealing with your book, I'd put three * (asterisks) before the
name of the person who is speaking in the inset. And again when the main
text picked up after the inset. Yes, it's a lot of asterisking to type and
later read, but I don't know another way to achieve the separation that
you're needing to keep.

Just my thoughts, for what they're worth, which pre-coffee as I am is
probably very very little.

Except their actual name is bolded in the text and all caps for the insets,
and I would be altering the text if I instead put it in brackets, no?

When there are multiples in a row and no author text, I figure I do not need
additional separation (the triple asterisks), but often it is in between a
comment or assessment or a quote that is signed after the quote.

UGH!

Hi!

I think I understand. *smile*

If there's a different person speaking or writing, you could preface
their statement with a left bracket, their name, and a right
bracket--leaving a blank line before and after, just like we do with
[picture caption]. Just my two cents worth--which probably isn't worth a
whole lot.

Thanks for confirming my suspicion.

It is really tough to describe, Lynnsky, and all very visual, sadly.
For example, in The Secret, it might have insets from three different
people (denoted by a small icon and their name bolded and occasionally
their job
titles) as well as a quote from another person with a script style
signature after the quote, on a separate line. This is all in
addition to the "normal" body of text.

Clear as mud, huh?

Hi Valerie!

The triple asterisk reads as "star star star". I use that only
between sections or scene changes. I think if it were used often, it
would be a major distraction to listen to other than to denote
section or scene changes. *smile*

I do not indent the first lines of paragraphs because the tool seems
to be taking the indentation out, and also because if I have JAWS set
to read the indentation, it drives me crazy.

Okay, I have had two books in a row in my project pile with tons of
transitions, increasing indents, and white space. It seems my only
option is the triple asterisk surrounding insets and marking these
transitions and white spaces, but my guess is it makes for very busy
distractions for Braille readers and I cannot imagine how it comes
across on audio conversions.

Any suggestions?

Valerie
