No, I know of nothing that would support the contention that reading will exacerbate psychological disorders. A psychological disorder may effect the reading choices of the person who has it though. Also, people have sex drives. That exists with or without reading and people are prone to act on their sex drives even if some would never admit it. Reading a book is not going to increase or diminish a sex drive. It is unfortunate that a good deal, if not most, written material on the subject of sex does not help in providing information that will lead to responsible sexual choices, but if you ban the reading of sexual writings then you will for sure not come across the material that will provide the needed information. That is similar to what someone else said to me. I was pointing out that it is a shame to waste protective resources protecting children from something that will do them no harm when there is so much out there that is actually harmful. The censorship defender then asked if I had heard of a danger called AIDS. This was, of course, a comment based on the false assumption that reading sexually oriented material would encourage a person to go out and get AIDS. My reply was that I most certainly had heard of AIDS and it was good that that example had been brought up. Let's face it. The main means by which AIDS is transmitted is through sexual contact. That means that not only is AIDS an example of a real danger, but it is a danger that especially makes my point. Not only does this fruitless effort to supposedly protect children from knowledge of sex divert from real dangers like AIDS, but it actually increases that danger by depriving children of the knowledge needed to protect themselves.

I guess you don't know anyone who was helped over the edge from reading suicide supportive text or people who feel eating disorders and other related material support their choices. And what about Columbine and other kids whose minds were poisoned and dark sides deepened by what they read. And if you do not think reading contributes to teen pregnancy and poverty, you are quite wrong. I know many people who when they read suggestive things they did not understand, so they decided to explore and experiment without knowing the repercussions, were not equipped to deal with the aftermath.

Reading can both broaden a mind or narrow it. I have seen both. That is why I support guidance for young minds with removable barriers with proper supports.
