If I'm scanning a mass market paperback, (the typical size of most paperbacks),
I make sure to break the book in. The book won't look great after doing this,
but it saves from having to press too hard when holding it down in two-page
mode. I start at the middle of the book and fold it back upon itself until the
covers meet and hold it for a few seconds. After that, I go 10-20 pages in
both directions and do the same thing until I reach the covers, one half at a
time.
I've only hurt one scanner over quite a long spell.

  Subject: [bksvol-discuss] scanner broke

Hi people. I was scanning a book today and I accidentally pressed down too
hard on it and now the head won't work, wah! Now I'll have to call the place
where I got it and hope they repaired it. Let's hope I don't have to mail it
all the way to plustek! That'd be expensive and I've heard too many horror
stories about that company for my liking. It may just be cheaper to get a new
scanner, but I heard that they're having problems with them, from Laura Anne's
email, so I guess I'll just have to get this one fixed. Hopefully it won't cost
too much.
  Julia
