I have duxbury on my computer, so I can read a .brf file with that; however, I
generally transfer the file to my bookport once it is unzipped. Mike saves the
.brf file to a flash card and reads it with his Braillenote.

  Hi Jill,

Yes, you can read a BRF file on your computer. You can save it to the
desktop, my documents, or wherever you want. Then you can open it with
notepad. I have done this many times.

  Hope that helps,
  Sue S.

If Nancy means reading with a braille display connected to her computer, can
she do this? I happen to transfer my BRF books to a flash card for reading on
the BrailleNote, but as I have a braille display, I tried loading it to the
folder suggested and found that I got a "is not a valid win32 application. The
file was unzipped but did I do something wrong or can't this be done? Jill

    Hi, Nancy,

I will give you the method I use to unzip the book and save it as a .brf
file which can be then read, saved to a flash drive, etc.

Once I have downloaded the book from bookshare to my computer I
Enter on the name of the .zip file.
A file with a .brf extension appears; I space to select that file.
Then I press alt and will be in the file menu.
I arrow up to the choice extract all and press enter.
    Then I tab to next.
The prompt gives the option of where it will save the file but you can
browse to save it wherever you wish.
Once I have chosen the location to save I tab to the edit box for my
bookshare pasword.
I enter my pasword in that field and tab to next and press enter.
A box appears which says something like "show all files". That box should
already be checked, so I tab to finish and press enter.

This may be more detail than you want or need, but I hope it answers your
question.

      Hi everyone,
I downloaded several .brf books from Bookshare but can't read them.

From the context menu I choose "open with compressed zip folder". I give
my password, then I'm placed in a download situation where I'm asked if I want
to open or cancel this file. Selecting open gets me that message about Windows
doesn't know what program to use to open this kind of file. Going online to
look gets me nowhere and I can't figure out what program to choose from a list.
I was under the impression that all I needed was a braille display but no
special software. Besides that, I thought the book was already downloaded.
Why am I shown a download box? I'd appreciate any help from anyone who uses
this format and a braille display.
      thanks much,
      Nancy Martin
