Rik J ISBN #: 978-0-8061-4185-5 TITLE: The Irish general : Thomas Francis Meagher AUTHOR: Paul R. Wylie YEAR OF COPYRIGHT: Copyright © 2007 by the University of Oklahoma Press PUBLISHER: University of Oklahoma Press GENRE: nonfiction, Biography, History, LONG DESCRIPTION: Irish patriot, Civil War general, frontier governor--Thomas Francis Meagher played key roles in three major historical arenas. Today he is hailed as a hero by some, condemned as a drunkard by others. Paul R. Wylie now offers a definitive biography of this nineteenth-century figure who has long remained an enigma. The Irish General first recalls Meagher's life from his boyhood and leadership of Young Ireland in the revolution of 1848, to his exile in Tasmania and escape to New York, where he found fame as an orator and as editor of the Irish News. He served in the Civil War--viewing the Union Army as training for a future Irish revolutionary force--and rose to the rank of brigadier general leading the famous Irish Brigade. Wylie traces Meagher's military career in detail through the Seven Days battles, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. Wylie then recounts Meagher's final years as acting governor of Montana Territory, sorting historical truth from false claims made against him regarding the militia he formed to combat attacking American Indians, and plumbing the mystery surrounding his death. Even as Meagher is lauded in most Irish histories, his statue in front of Montana's capitol is viewed by some with contempt. The Irish General brings this multi-talented but seriously flawed individual to life, offering a balanced picture of the man and a captivating reading experience. volunteer comments: This book was scanned using Kurzweil K-1000 latest version 14.01. I have retained the .kes file with images as well as the printed copy. So if there is an issue, I can refer to it. Where page numbers were at the bottom, I have moved them to the top of each page, with a blank line above and below it. All text is at 12 point regular Arial font. Except that I have modified the headings according to Bookshare standards - 20 point bold for the title, 16 point bold for the headings. There are chapter headings as well as a table of contents, acknowledgements, introdution, notes, bibliography, and index. On pages with photo or image captions I have put this at the beginning: [image caption: with a closed bracket ] at the end of the caption. Where the page is blank, I have also made this: [page is blank.] and put a page number at the top of the page, when needed. While the scan of this book produced very few errors, I used Ranked Spelling and worked extensively to make improvements in many instances. There are many, many proper names and places. And there are a many words that are using alternate spelling from quoted text reflecting a way of writing and speaking in the earlier times. Also in many instances there are words with a [] to include a letter that was left out of the author's source material. For example, the word any might look like [a]ny. There were quite a lot of situation where the letter and spacing on the page would cause words to be together, or between things, so as much as I could find, I made those corrections using my K-1000 program to discover and edit them. Of course even though I spent hours on this and the final Ranked Spelling was 99.4 %, there may still of course be some of these situations remaining. I am available for any question, if I can be of further assistance, please do contact me at this email address: d28rik @ msn.com. I am also on the bksvol discussion email list. Good luck! I hope you may like the book as much as I did when scanning and reading it. This title is a part of our local history organization, and I purchased this directly from the author who resides here. I see that we have other titles from him already in the Bookshare collection. Thanks. Rik
