Thank you all.T he file I corrected will have to be corrected again, I'm
afraid. I misunderstood something and did the wrong thing ; I'd put no
space before the em dash and one after. - no, I didn't -- I did it right,
with no spaces.That's a relief. The double click I remembered doing was to
find the double dash to change to the em dash. I'd been told not to use
both, i.e. I'd left the original double dash but was told to use either
them or an em dash and because there were em dashes I had to change the
double dashes to em dashes I just checked the file I still had on my esktop
and I did them without spaces. What a relief. Now I can go on to the next
book smile

No spaces before or after except that sometimes a sentence ends in an M
dash. That most often happens when a speaker is cut off and the sentence is
unfinished.
