I have heard m dash when I was reading something. I thought it was some weird jaws thing. When I arrowed back to find it; i never could.
It gets on my nerves, though. Rita----- Original Message ----- From: "Grandma Cindy" <popularplace@xxxxxxxxx>

To elaborate a bit on Jamie's explanation--it introduces and ends a side thought--a thought that isn't quite part of the sentence. The Princess Diary books are full of them, as, unfortunately, I suppose, is most of my writing, including here on the list. Sometimes the side thought is acplanatory, sometimes totally off point. That's why you can't just use a regular dash (a hyphen). An em dash has always been made by typing two hyphens. Modern software turns the two hyphens into an em dash which looks like one long dash. If you go into word and type -- (hyphen hyphen with no spaces), word will turn it into an em dash which is now represented by ^+ if you're searching for it with the find command. You can tell word not to automatically convert it, if you choose. Jamie in Michigan Currently Reading - Divided in Death by J. D. Robb I'm an eBay affiliate, click here before you bid!
