Thanks everyone for help on this. After fiddling around, both the alt 0176 and the alt 248 work. I also discovered, for those who don't have a number pad, you can type the unicode hex value followed by alt x to enter any symbol you may need. The alt x toggles the symbol, so, if you have a character you want to know the unicode hex value for, place your cursor to the right of it, and press alt x to determine the value. I'm just learning more and more everyday.

Melissa,

Make sure Numlock is on and then hold down Alt and enter 2-4-8 on the numberpad. I just tried it using Window-Eyes and it put in degrees.

Okay, this does not seem to be working for me I have a laptop with an external numpad. My understanding of how to do these was to press and hold the alt key while pressing the numbers on the numpad. After pressing the numbers and releasing the alt key there is nothing added to the document. I use WindowEyes, so using the Jaws command for inserting special characters will not work. Is there something different I need to do with a laptop, even though I have an external numpad attached? I have Windows XP SP3 and am using Word XP.

Is there a keyboard shortcut for inserting a degree sign? I'm going to be working on some cookbooks, and my keyboard doesn't have a degree sign.
Thanks,

Melissa
