I do not think anything intrinsic has changed except now people are afraid to ask so they know less about disabled people. Also, they are afraid to say "blind" and afraid to speak in general. Political correctness, as far as I am concerned simply means that people are less frank and learn less.
Laws mean that all kinds of people have now developed all kinds of disabilities so they can be covered under ADA. ADA never helped me that I know of and black people will tell you they are still discriminated against. Only now it is more stealthy.
I do think more blind folks are working than did in the seventies but I think the reason is improved technology which lets us communicate and work better rather than legal mandates.

I think folks do wonder how we will do tasks in the back of their minds. Anyone who really wants a job is going to have to be the one who addresses this question law or no law. And frankly, if I am hiring someone I have the right to be comfortable that they will be able to do the job. People simply do not know how we do things and if we want to be hired we just have to explain because the law forbids them from asking.
I do not think my being a blind woman made it harder for me than being a blind man though I might be incorrect here.
