Hi Charlene, When there's a book at the office that requires someone to have access to a print copy to fix it, I do the editing myself (or another inhouse volunteer could, but at this point, I'm the only inhouse volunteer they have - Janice is trying to recruit other people quickly!). I try to put only books that will be easy to edit in the download list. If a book has recipes or charts or a page that's torn, I edit it. What I do with all books I edit, is click on Select All from the Edit menu, right-click on some text, and then click on Font on the drop-down menu. I choose a font (usually Times New Roman), and turn off all those little boxes (superscript, subscript, small caps, etc). I go to the next tab called Character Spacing, and set the scale to 100% and the spacing and position to normal. I click Ok at the bottom, and then right-click on the text again. This time I choose Paragraph on the drop-down menu. I set Spacing Before to 0 pt, Spacing After to 0 pt, and Line Spacing to single, and then Ok. This sequence takes care of any and all weird font or spacing problems. It of course doesn't fix misspelled words or garbled capital letters, but it makes editing a lot easier for me. My 2 cents. Carrie Charlene <caota@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote: The problem with that book is the font, capital letters don't always come out right, and columns with headings and print that varies in size so the text doesn't fall right. I was using an optacon to look at the pages and it was getting to be a big project to say the least. There' really aren't that many figures and I didn't see many charts at least in the first third of the book. I'm just curious, when bookshare scans a book, who does the editing in situations where it almost requires someone to access the print copy and fix the book? Scanning won't be a problem, but it sounds like validating it will be. Charts and graphs take a large amount of time... Carrie Charlene <caota@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote: Carrie, you're a very good, kind soul! (SMILE) I'll do just that! However, whoever gets the privelege of scanning it is in for tearing their hair out! Thanks much! I gather you've already put in the request. So stop scanning it, stop tearing your hair out, send it back to the library, sit back, relax, and enjoy the holiday season! Have an extra eggnog on me! :-) It may take a while to order and proces s the book (I just got 10 NYT books to process for December!), but it'll get done eventually. The reason I asked is that I've been attempting to scan "You The Owners Manual" by MICHAEL F. ROIZEN, M.D., and MEHMET C. OZ, M.D. and it's tough going and if bookshare is already acquiring it I would promptly throw up my hands and send it back to the library! (smile!) I think the book is really worthwhile, but it 's a real pain to scan, so was hoping it might be coming one of these days.
