Oh, Monica, my thoughts will be with you, and my prayers, too, if that means
anything to you. <smile> I know how hard this has to be on all of you, since
my grandfather lost his battle with cancer two and a half years ago, the
week before Thanksgiving in 2003. I'll be praying for your aunt's recovery
and for the rest of your family, since I know this is a lot of added stress
on all of you. Let us know how things are going. Take care.

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] OT: Changing Directions

Hi everyone. I had big plans for this summer, both regarding
Bookshare work and fun time with my daughter. Life has thrown us a
curve ball, and I don't know yet how it will impact my volunteer work
here. We found out yesterday that my aunt has advanced stage breast
cancer and will have to go through surgery and some sort of
chemotherapy. It has moved beyond the breast, so bone and muscle
have to be removed too. Complicating this is the fact that she has
been caring for my 81-year-old grandmother who has significant heart
and lung disease. My grandmother has a leaky heart valve, and has
only 52 percent capacity for circulation from her heart. She is too
weak for surgical repair of the valve. Both of them live in Indiana,
11 hours from where I live. Our family is going to need to spend the
summer caring for both women and traveling back and forth in various
configurations. My mother is afraid to fly, so most of our traveling
will be by car. My 13-year-old daughter spent a lot of time with my
aunt as she was growing up, and she's taking this news pretty
hard. This whole thing hit our family sideways, and we're still
trying to sort it all out.

I will probably be chosen to run my father's business while my mom
goes to Indiana during the surgery. If things don't go well, I will
have to leave pretty quickly. I will release any books I have out
for validation before we leave since I probably won't have computer
access for awhile. So for now I'm still around and will finish the
books I have out for validation. I'm not going to take on any new
projects until I know more about what's going on.

Thanks for listening to me ramble. (smile)

Monica
