Hi, Jill. I agree with you. I have a little vision myself, but when it comes
to asking for help, it's just a lot easier to tell people that I'm blind,
because while I do have some usable vision, it's easier than trying to
explain to someone how much I can see and how much help is too much or not
enough. I've found that, if I tell people I'm visually impaired, they don't
understand what that means, and understandably so, since there are so many
varying degrees of visual impairment. Some people who are low-vision can see
well enough to follow when a sighted person just points to something. I
can't, so it's much easier to just make them think I can't see anything when
it comes to that. Take care.

I think the problem here is that the general public thinks that blind means
totally blind; hence visually impaired came into being. I help conduct a
group of people who mostly have macular degeneration and are seniors. I
think if this group was advertised as a group for the blind, the attendance
would drop considerably because these people don't think of themselves as
blind, just visually impaired. Although I have a small amount of sight, I,
however, refer to myself as blind when asking for assistance.
