Carrie,

Sounds wise. Hopefully Bookshare can find the money in the budget.

Gerald

Hi Gerald,

That would be wonderful, if I could set a primary and secondary language in
FineReader. I will check on that Monday when I go in.

I don't believe Bookshare has upgraded to version 8.0 yet. There are 2
computers in Marissa's office that have FineReader 5.0 and 7.0 (out of the 4
computers in there). I suggested to the Bookshare staff that we upgrade the
5.0 to 8.0 and leave the 7.0 one alone, in case a major bug is discovered in
8.0. Hopefully this will be done sooner rather than later.

Carrie

  Carrie,

My guess would be that it can handle two languages since OpenBook has both
a primary and secondary language in its scan settings. I wouldn't have the
slightest idea how to configure FineReader for the secondary language if it
does, though, since OpenBook does the configuring of the OCR software.

BTW, has Bookshare upgraded to FineReader 8.0, or are they still using 7?

  Gerald

If I leave the language as English, every Latin word will be flagged as
misspelled, even though it's not. Of course, if I choose Latin, every
English word will be flagged as misspelled. Can't win! I wish there was
some way to say, there are 2 languages in this book, check that the word is
in one language or the other before you flag it as misspelled. I assume
that ABBYY is not that sophisticated yet.... or is it? Someone please tell
me that that option already exists. :-)

I'll email you, Pratik, when the book is in the download queue, so you can
validate it.

  Thanks! Carrie

On behalf of Lena, and myself, thank you, Pratik.

    I'm curious, though--when I took first and second-year
Latin in high school, the letters, i.e., fonts, were
like English letters, unlike the non-romance languages
I''ve seen. It was as easy to read the Latin (not
translate, of course, until I'd learned) as the
English. Why would Carrie have to change the
recognition language on the scanner? Just curious.
