I'd bet it wasn't a scannoe, but rather a function of the automatic correction feature of whatever software they were using.

The book in question is Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. The submitter/proofer was Daproim Africa.. I suspect the problem I noticed was a scan-o, I can certainly believe that 'Galt' would be read as 'Gait' and not caught by an unwary proofer. I have the book checked out now, it will be interesting to see if I spot other problems.
