Hi Roger,
Thatâs sort of what I was thinking after I spent some time with it. Thanks!

The point about protecting chapter headings with a blank line is that when the
chapter heading is at the beginning of a page it might be stripped out by the
conversion tools. That applies to anything at the beginning of the page whether
it is a chapter heading, a page number or the first line of the text. If you
add a blank line it is the blank line that gets stripped out. If the chapter
heading appears in the middle of the page with text both before and after it
then protecting it is not an issue. I don't know why the three asterisks are
being advised unless it is to indicate a blank line before the chapter heading.
The point of the three asterisks is that blank lines are stripped out by the
conversion tools and sometimes there is reason to retain the blank lines. Since
the conversion tools are going to strip them out whether we want them to or not
then we have come up with a symbol that signifies a blank line and that is the
three asterisks. In books in which I have seen chapter headings in the middle
of the page there is certainly a blank line or several blank lines before it,
but I don't necessarily see why they should be retained. The most common reason
for retaining them is that they often indicate a passage of time or a change of
scene. In the case of a new chapter beginning the chapter heading itself does
that job and I don't see why it would be confusing to have the chapter heading
start on the very next line without the asterisks. Whatever the case, though,
the asterisks are not there to protect the chapter headings.

Yes, but we need to put a blank line before and after chapter headings to
âprotectâ them, or thatâs what weâve been told, because the bookshare tools
might harm them in some way. This is the very first time Iâve heard that we
need to put in 3 asterisks. So, is this a new thing for us to do or not?

It is my understanding that the conversion tool eliminates all blank lines,
so the asterisks are to retain blank lines, that is, lines with no text. If
nothing was put on the line, the tool would eliminate it.

  Hi Valerie and other friends,
Putting three asterisks is a new thing, yes. Also, I thought that we were
supposed to âprotectâ chapter headings with a blank line before and after the
headings. What are we supposed to do now?

Is the three asterisks a new thing? I was not aware of that and did not do
it in my Kay Tracey paperbacks. I hate getting things wrong! I can fix it
while I still have the book, if so; I think I remember which one it was...

  Hi Laura,

Vivian is correct, please leave it as is and add the three asterisks!

I also had one where the chapter started on a middle of the page, but it was
that way in the book. What I did was separate it by using the 3 asterisks.
