Dear Volunteers,
Today, for the first time, I ordered a book from Amazon to aid me in
validating. Its got mondo errors so I thought most of you wouldn't mind
that I've had it out for a long time.
When I first downloaded it and noticed all of its frequent, major, jumbles,
I ordered a copy from the library which took some weeks to arrive. Meanwhile
I was working on other books.
With 3 books waiting to be uploaded, I decided to work on this book which is
a change of pace from the types of books I've been doing.
I discovered what happens when you don't examine a new download thoroughly.
The scan was of a large print edition and my library sent a regular print
edition with page breaks in different places and different publishing
information.
The person who first encouraged me to join and helped me download my first
book to read had mentioned he bought books from Amazon to help with his
validations. I thought he was nearly a saint to spend his actual money like
that, but confined myself to thanking him profusely for getting me launched.
I haven't been in touch with him since and he posts very rarely to this
list, but I know he's steadily and quietly validating.
Today I understood why he invested in buying necessary versions of books.
Once you've kept a book, badly in need of correction, it's really hard to
give it up unless you know it's needed quickly or are positive some one else
will give it a better scan. What's the expression? "One bird in the hand is
better than two in the bush."
My order is official. I have more pressing books to work on while it ships.
It's a messy but fun read and I'll be extra proud when it's finally
approved.
It's hard to imagine anyone who is enjoying the thrill of each baby step
toward being a competent, all around Book-share volunteeras much as I am.
It's also exciting to realize that even when I've got most of the process
under wraps, new glitches and challenges will pop up to keep volunteering
dynamic.
Always With Love,
Lissi
