Yesterday, 1:30 p.m., Elizabeth St. Park, Lexington, KY. As I was leaving the park after a quick peruse and having seen only a few Robins I noticed a couple of small birds splashing in a puddle the size of a dinner plate (I'm sure it's more like a small swimming pool today). Binos up and lo and behold a Cape May and Yellow Rump warbler bathing...after all this rain? A few steps closer I started scanning the line of 5-6 spruce trees along the sidewalk. Immediatley, a Magnolia came into view and as the CM and YR left the puddle the Magnolia took his turn at the puddle. Within a few minutes I saw another Cape May, a Black Poll, more Yellow Rumps, a N. Parula, and a Pine Warbler. This occurred in a span of 5 minutes and within 20 feet of where I was standing...then,poof, they were gone as quickly as they came. Oh, what small delights to make this sogginess a bit tolerable. BTW: The Elizabeth St. Park is a small jewell of park in itself...tucked away amongst UK rental housing between Waller Ave. and Arcadia Park Dr., unfortunatley, the park has no parking except on street. A true neighborhood park, but worth a brief visit if you're in the area.
