My standard protocol is to carry a camera with me unless I expect to be doing
some activity that would endanger it. I thought that could be the case
yesterday, because a neighbor phoned me and said she saw a brand new calf in
front field that looked like it couldn’t get up. There was no new calf. What
she had likely seen was a day old calf that had been ripping and running, fell
down and its own mother’s aggressive licking was interfering with it getting
up. After determining that all was okay, we continued front field circle. Our
route brings middle pond into view all at once. This is because we approach
this diked pond from the down hill side. As the water surface came into view, a
pair of Wood Ducks were near the dike edge nearest us. Their details were
visible to the naked eye. They didn’t startle immediately because only our
heads were visible to them. The time before they startled was lengthy enough
that I could have gotten a good photo, if camera had been with me.
