You know, Rob, I can't disagree with your assessment of the coloring of some of the birds. When I looked through the book, I as well thought several of the prints were "darker." I didn't have such a visceral response to it, I guess. My first impression was that the "darker" feel just instilled an overall intensity to the prints. There'll probably always be stylistic preferences for folks when it comes to field guides. I am still drawn to the additional info/detail/maps/angles provided, and the font size doesn't bother me (I just hold the book 6 inches from my face!) I would also agree with you that folks should look at the book themselves before deciding on the purchase. respectfully, Mark ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rob Lane" <shrikeguy@xxxxxxxxx> To: markdt7@xxxxxxxxxxx Cc: "BIRDKY Freelists" <birdky@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, March 14, 2014 9:26:34 AM Subject: [birdky] Re: The New Sibley 2nd Edition caveat emptor!! I purchased my copy of the Sibley 2nd edition of Tuesday the day it came out. It was right after a morning of birding and presentation with Greg Miller of The Big Year fame. I was so excited, I raced into Carmichael's Bookstore in Louisville purchased my copy, drove my car home and........was very very disappointed!! The colors especially pinks, reds, oranges, and rufous were all very dark. The heads of some of the geese like tundra and taiga bean goose were horrible. The legs of Pink-footed goose were dark orange. Some of the pelagic species like shearwater and petrels were more confusing than ever due to the dark blurry colors. Yes new species have been added and so have the new additional text. However the text print that has been added is very small print. I believe that this 2nd edition will have to be reprinted. Not sure if this was a printer defect or what!! If you have not purchased the 40.00 dollar cover price book I would recommend examining the book beforehand before purchase. You can make your own mind up after on purchasing or holding off!! Images are crisper, maps bigger and with better detail (including habitat/bird finding descriptions). Numerous species accounts have more/improved angle drawings. He shows better attention to comparing details of similar species. Overall, he improves on things I thought previously Peterson did better w/o an increase in the size of book. Of note, he has included countless new rarities (most of which have only occured once or twice in North America). I'm not necessarily a rarity-phile, but I know some are.
