Major Waltman and I kayaked from the Clark Cabin boat ramp over to Goose
Island and the adjacent fossil beds at the Falls of the Ohio this morning.
Over three hours we had approximately 200 shorebirds (100 were Killdeer of
course), and another 150 or so egrets and herons. We did NOT see the Snowy
Egret that's been around for a while and observed by others this morning.
Also missing was the Roseate Spoonbill unfortunately. The Willet that
Micheal Autin found the other day is still around and as someone else
reported it appears to have an injured wing. We had one fly over Caspian
Tern. Most of the shorebirds were on Wave Rock, but there were lots spread
out all over the place in pairs or small groups. We were really surprised
to see SEVEN Little Blue Herons! All visible at one time, so we didn't
count any twice. My favorite bird of the day was a Red-headed Woodpecker I
heard, then Major tracked down on Goose Island. Link to ebird checklist is
below. I got some pretty close up shots of the Willet by belly crawling
through some nasty puddles and fresh goose poo. Jumping in the shower now!
