Just came off Lake Cumberland from fishing overnight. We saw 3 loons in the
main lake near Wolf Creek Dam. Good looks at one Common Loon still (mostly)
in breeding plumage that seems to be starting to molt. Two others in the
vicinity but not good enough views to say species for sure, although they
were most likely also Common. Several Double-creasted Cormorants on bouys
and in the water by the gates.
It's been at least 5 weeks since we last heard the Chuck Will's Widows
singing or the young Great Blue Herons on the nest while we fished.
Great birding while on the water makes these all-nighters much
more enjoyable than the few I remember from college!! Oh, and about 70
meteors from last night's peak of the Persied show were absolutely
breathtaking! I'd love to know how many more we might have seen if we could
have looked up the entire night... but it is a little hard to fish that way.
