I visited western Hardin County today to see how many cranes were still in the
area. The big flocks have definitely moved on, but I probably saw 1500 birds in
groups of 2 to 200-250 scattered all over. They are mostly along the edges and
depressions in the fields, with a few groups very close to area roads. Not sure
what freezing of roost ponds again tonight will do to them, but I guess they'll
probably stick it out rather than head north.
