We saw a group of near 500 cranes on hillside behind Freedom’s Church off
Bethlehem Academy road.
We also saw a pair of meadowlarks and 5 kestrel on phone lines. My
girlfriend swears she saw a kettle of hawks as we drove back into Cecilia.
A very fun Valentines Day.

The surrounding counties that the cranes favor when Cecilia wet spots are
dried up have not also not seen large numbers. I have noticed the past few
years they will literally come in strong and in one day empty out of Hardin
county.

I think thousands of cranes have left the Cecilia vicinity already and
headed north. I could only find 1500-2000 this afternoon, which may sound
like a lot, but for someone who has been there a number of times when there
were 5000-10000 I was disappointed. Most of the birds were far from the
roads. The biggest group was up north along St. John Road. Despite recent
rains the area transient pools are not particularly high and are receding.
At around 400 pm, there were probably only a couple of dozen cranes within
view of the KY 86 fire station where normally there would be hundreds. The
area could use a big rain to form more pools. The peak for this "spring"
may have already occurred otherwise . . . :-(
A few waterfowl were on ponds along my loops including 3 Greater
White-fronted Geese, 9 Northern Shovelers, and 10 Northern Pintail.
