There are three Kestrel pairs with territories within sight of our house.
I have seen them eating lizards, cicadas and small rodents, of course.
I’ve noticed that the feeder birds tend to ignore them, so have assumed
that they rarely eat birds. That changed this afternoon, when I spotted
one of the pair that hunts the east edge of the south soybean field, on the
utility wire, eating a bird. I wanted to get close enough to identify the
meal, but the best that I could do was several hundred yards. This pair
hunts the open fields, so I’m thinking that it may have been a longspur or
pipit but I couldn’t tell begin to tell. Photo link follows:
