I, too have used the Van Ert traps. They work very well. (I found a dead
bluebird in one of my boxes at school - after that, it was war!) To prevent
catching bluebirds, I stapled a piece of cardboard over the opening of the nest
box with a smaller diameter hole. The bluebirds were too big to fit, but it
wasn't a problem for the house sparrows. I removed it after trapping, so the
bluebirds could then use the box. I asked our school principal if he would
"take care" of the sparrows for me when we caught one. He had no problem
wringing their necks, having been raised on a farm. One day, he wasn't there
and I had to take care of the trapped bird. I had read that if you press on
their chest, it will stop their heart. I'm as squeamish as they come, but I
managed to do it. We used the bag over the nest box technique, as well. Of
course, we don't let the third graders know that we are dispatching the birds.
We're just taking them to a "nice new home."
We've only had to trap sparrows one year. We've been really lucky. I keep the
traps on hand, just in case. Janet

I didn't know you all would accept frozen birds. We usually kill a sparrow
with ether. But maybe I should get over my queasiness and choose a method that
would permit a "donation" to your operation.

Anyone that does not use something harmful or toxic, if they would pop them in
the freezer I would take them. Baby season is coming and the Coopers Hawk
chicks would enjoy them. Currently our falcons get quail for avian meals and
that is the only avian the Coops get as well, just not as often. I hate for
chicks to grow up thinking they are mouse eaters. Pigeons, starlings and
sparrows are so much better.
