Question... what do you do with the sparrows after you trap them???

For bluebird boxes, we use the Van Ert Universal Sparrow Trap. http://www.vanerttraps.com/products.htm

Ideally, you have the screws already set at the beginning of the season. When we see a house sparrow visiting a box, we slide in the trap and tighten one of screws. Usually, we catch the male within 30 minutes. We then slip a plastic garbage bag over the box and open the door.

We should start banding the bluebirds and tree swallows we catch and release. It would be fun to know the age profile of nesting birds, the percentage of nesting birds that hatched on the farm. Things like that.

I don't have a solution for martin houses. In hindsight, that should have been a big consideration when we selected our martin house. And who taught house sparrows what a pellet rifle looks like?

Good luck.

Hey Mike,
How do you trap the house sparrows? I never thought of that, but they have multiplied and are trying to take over my bluebird houses and my martin houses too!
Good thought!
