The rusty-colored edges to the feathers of the crown, mantle, upperwing coverts, and tertials contrasting with the gray lower back and rump and blackish tail eliminate similar species. Males are typically blackish overall with varying amounts of rusty feather edging. The habitat is also a clue, with this species often frequenting wet or swampy areas.
