The correct answer to the April 7 Photo Quiz is Vesper Sparrow. The combination of finely streaked breast and crown, auriculars outlined in dark, and bold white eye-ring eliminate similar species. The rufous lesser coverts visible in the photo is also a clue although this is not always visible in the field. The Savannah Sparrow is the most similar species and the two are often found together. Savannah Sparrow typically does not show a bold white eye-ring, and usually shows a touch of yellow in the lores and prominent supercilium. Savannah is also shorter-tailed than Vesper and lacks the white outer rectrices of Vesper which can be seen when the bird is in flight. Savannah sometimes shows pale outer webs to the outer rectrices however. This Vesper Sparrow was photographed on 4 April 2005 near Chaney Lake in Warren County. David L.
