Accreditation by an accredited national body is a requirement for all
professions in VA. That will be true for LMFTs and LPCs also. We are aware that
not all programs are accredited. This is an essential requirement, however. To
not have it for these groups would leave us unable to sustain such a
requirement for Psychologists and Social Workers.

This gets even more complicated in that the educational requirement for the
licensed professional mental health counselor is:

b. Education. Hold a master’s degree in mental health counseling, or a related
field, from a program

accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Counseling and Related
Educational Programs

(CACREP). Examples of related mental health counseling fields include, but are
not limited to,

Addiction Counseling; Community Counseling; Gerontology Counseling; Marital,
Couple, and Family

Counseling; and Marriage and Family Therapy. A doctoral degree in mental health
counseling may not

be substituted for the master’s degree in mental health counseling.

----------------------------------------

According to my husband who is on faculty at the Univ of Kansas in the
Counseling Psychology Program:

CACREP and Div 17 have gone to war about CACREP's new rule that says if a
faculty member is considered core faculty in an APA accredited program, they
cannot be considered core faculty in a CACREP program, pretty much ensuring
departments with APA accredited programs will no longer be able to offer both
an APA accredited counseling psych program and a CACREP accredited masters
program, unless they have a lot of faculty.

--------------------------------------------------------

If you go to the CACREP website and look at their directory, you will note that
most school that have APA programs (as best I can tell at a glance) are not
listed. Therefore, I imagine this will incite the APA accredited academic
programs that also have master’s programs and have students who become licensed
professional counselors since their students will not be eligible for the jobs
in the VA. Also, it seems that these students would likely be some of the most
capable.

It is interesting to me that the LPC who is a program manager can be a GS 13 –
the grade level that many psychologists who manage programs and have years of
experience cannot move beyond.
