Well, I can only dream about taking control of someone's thoughts..... but I'm pretty confident that I scare the daylights out of most people :-) Maybe instead of writing manuals for my clients, I should persuade them to pop halvsies in setting up a Temple of Eternal Enlightenment, where their users can (at vast expense) be programmed to use their systems, instead of the other way around ;-) -----Original Message----- From: BIRTLEY-KENT,Christine [mailto:Christine.BIRTLEY-KENT@xxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Thursday, 11 March 2004 4:38 PM To: austechwriter@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: atw: Re: Writing IS Programming!! I think you are misdefining the word 'programming'.=20=20 If you talk to someone, they can choose to hear you and absorb what you are saying, but this is not programming. I contend that this is mostly what the TW does - talks reasonably and nicely enough for the listener to choose to listen. We at no stage take control. But programming a person's thoughts is another thing entirely - it entails taking control of their own thoughts and over-ruling them. This can only be done by fully recruiting the emotions. The art of hypnotherapy relies on the subject being in trusting (ie emotional) relationship with the hypnotist, and thus accessible to mental programming. Fundamentalist religions and cults work in exactly the same way - they capture people emotionally by appealing to their emotions - making them feel good, feeding their ego, singing and dancing, sometimes scaring the daylights out of them - they engender a whole range of potent emotional reactions. Once they have the person emotionally disarrayed, they can then program them with a new package of thoughts that slip in unresisted. Whilst the two do work together, they are certainly not the same thing. As writers we can choose how much control we take by determining the degree to which we will stir the emotions - advertising works this way.
