The Department of the Environment was established by the Environment Protection Act 1973 and I probably still have a copy of it somewhere. The first director was John Pottinger, an ex-NSW EPA man. In the 1980s the department became a part of the National Parks portfolio and it is still active. There was a mention of the department in the national news a few months ago. Unfortunately people tend to look at Tasmania with blinkered eyes.
