So that's why the media is full of them creating one? If there is one here,
then they are in breach of their duties regarding the air quality of the
entire north east coast resulting from the aluminium smelter at Georgetown.
They stopped air quality testing years ago.

So Allan, I look at the evidence of my own eyes - and given I am living in a
place that should be one of the most pristine on earth - and I came here for
that reason - those eyes are not blinkered. The place is as much an
environmental travesty as any third world nation, and deserves national
intervention to stop the use tax payer dollars for shoring up macho male
industries that will never be viable and that are seriously damaging the
environment.

However, this is all kept a closely guarded secret by the Tasmanians much
like domestic violence - we'll keep it in the family! So no-one dare
criticise the place or the people out loud, or put very serious
environmental issues on the national agenda.

Tasmania certainly does have an environment protection authority.
The Department of the Environment was established by the Environment
Protection Act 1973 and I probably still have a copy of it somewhere.
The first director was John Pottinger, an ex-NSW EPA man. In the 1980s
the department became a part of the National Parks portfolio and it is
still active. There was a mention of the department in the national
news a few months ago. Unfortunately people tend to look at Tasmania
with blinkered eyes.

Have a look at http://www.environment.tas.gov.au/
