If you want to stop updating styles accidentally, in pre-2007 you can turn off the 'Automatically update' button in the Modify Style dialog. In the Tools>Options>Edit tab, you should also turn off 'Keep track of formatting' and turn on 'Prompt to update style'. Always avoid using the Normal paragraph style. You can set the default style on the Tools>Options>Edit tab.

You'll also avoid a lot of grief if you don't use text boxes or floating frames. I paste such things into inserted picture objects.

 Textboxes use the
Normal style by default, and it is very easy to change the
definition of that style without knowing. And then to be looking
at your document just before you print to find that all your
captions have changed their formatting which prevents them from
being visible in their textbox. So be careful with this method.
