It's ages since I've done this which I did quite often at one time, but
never got that error.

I know that TableMate can be a bit flaky so I have always exported
whatever, as a Draw file, to wherever, before doing anything further.

Have you tried selecting all objects within the Draw file and then
grouping same. Also, selecting all grouped objects and then convert to
path. I seem to remember that you can lose text if you don't do that.
