Including the demands for lead-free optical glass(!) - you'd think
that would be the least of the worries; including a material in a
glass melt is a pretty good way to isolate it from the environment

On the other hand, we can do without lead in wire insulation. I was
surprised, at first, to see a power cord marked as "ROHS", since I
never thought those things had any lead in the first place -- but they
often did, as a stabilizer in the PVC insulation: as much as 100 ppm.
(Yes, PVC not only needs plasticizers to make it flexible but also
stabilizers to keep it from self-destructing.) When used as a
stabilizer, lead doesn't get out of the PVC in normal use, but of
course eventually it'll get out in one way or another.
