waste ("universal waste"), and I challenged it every time I talked to a
government EH&S person. "A person in average health can *eat* the
electrolyte in a AAA alkaline battery and not come to harm. What gives?"
About four years ago I got an answer. There is always a fraction of the
discarded batteries with enough mechanical damage to leach out. When there
were millions of batteries in the landfills, the water table could keep up
with the leachate and it wasn't a problem. With billions of batteries in
the landfills, it becomes a problem.
It's an abundance of caution, but like you're never sorry later that you
took video or data, you're never sorry later that you reduced your
pollution footprint.
