They rather overlook the benefits of encryption vs. identification. Even the identification aspect is underrated. While you can't know who's on the other end in an absolute sense (but exactly how does a certificate authority really change this ?), you can use it to increase your confidence that you are talking to the same person/visiting the same web site as last time.
