You don't have to rebuild it, just run in debug mode:
dispcal -D
XRRGetCrtcGammaSize number of entries 256 mismatches screen depth 64
This is mentioned in the X11 instalation instructions, see
"Fixing access to Video LUTs"
in the doco that comes with V1.1.0.
Maybe argyllcms could hint the screen depth is incorrect as a possible
explanation when error is occuring ?
Yes you're right that it would be better to return more detailed
error information by default. It's more re-coding than I want to do
for V1.1.0 though.
